# Scoring and correct answers

> Mark correct answers on the canvas, set points, penalties and time limits, and choose when respondents see answers and their score.

Quizzes turn questions into scored challenges. You mark the correct answer directly on the question, decide how many points it is worth, and choose what respondents see once they answer.

</Frame>

## Mark the correct answer

You set the answer key on the canvas, in the same place you write the question. Each scored question tells you how:

* On a Matrix question, the canvas prompts "Click cells below to mark correct answers".
* On a True/False question, it prompts "Click to set the correct answer".

Click the answer or answers you want to count as correct. You can change them at any time while you edit.

## Scoring settings

Open **Field settings** (the button at the top right of a question block) to control how a scored question is graded.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Answer score** | Points awarded for a correct answer. The default is 1. |
| **Mistake penalty** | Points taken off for a wrong answer. The default is 0, so a wrong answer costs nothing until you change it. |
| **Duration limit** | Limits how long respondents have to answer the question. |
| **Speed bonus** | Rewards faster answers. |

Scored questions also include the usual **Required**, **Multiple selection** and **Theme color** settings. See [Question settings](/user-guide/editor/question-settings) for how settings work in general.

## Add an explanation

Below the answer options on the canvas, write an **Explanation** to help respondents learn from their mistakes. It is shown together with the correction.

## Choose what respondents see

Quiz forms add two options to the form settings. Click the gear icon in the toolbar and open the **general** tab.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Show Answers** | Controls when correct answers are revealed, for example **After each question**. |
| **Show Score** | Displays the respondent's score after they submit. |
